Real problems, real fixes, real numbers

A selection of recent work across Tasmania. Client details are shared with permission, and the numbers are the ones we reported — including the ones that take longer than we'd like.

Essential Eight for a Hobart dental group

Multi-chair dental group, 14 staff

The problem

Facing a cyber-insurance premium increase, the group needed Essential Eight Maturity Level 3 evidence and had zero in-house IT. Two prior ransomware scares at neighbouring practices had put security on the board agenda.

What we did

We ran the gap assessment in week one, then executed in priority order: application allow-listing, MFA on all cloud and admin accounts, immutable backups with a tested restoration, and secure configuration baselines. Evidence was packaged control-by-control for the insurer.

The outcome

Level 3 achieved in 6 weeks with zero disruption to patient hours. The insurer renewed at a reduced premium, and the group's first backup restoration test (a 'real' one) completed in 40 minutes.

Site Wi-Fi for a Devonport builder

Residential builder, 8 staff + 20 subs

The problem

Paper plans were being sent home by photo. Office Wi-Fi was failing under load and the yard had no connectivity at all, so the office and the field were working from different versions of every job.

What we did

We surveyed the site, re-ran the office on a managed UniFi stack with an outdoor-rated AP for the yard, and stood up a central plan store with version history. Rugged laptops were imaged and joined to the network with a one-visit rollout.

The outcome

Paper plans retired within a month. Quoting is faster because versions stop colliding, and subbies get site access without touching the office network.

POS, CCTV and guest Wi-Fi for a cafe group

Cafe group, 3 locations

The problem

Three cafés, three different POS setups, one camera system that recorded to a drive which had failed twice, and guest Wi-Fi sharing a network with payment terminals.

What we did

Standardised the network on managed UniFi gear at each site, moved CCTV to a hardened NVR with 60-day retention, and put guest Wi-Fi on its own isolated segment so it can never reach the POS VLAN.

The outcome

One helpdesk number covers all three sites. The last 18 months: zero POS outages during trading hours and one camera incident that was resolved before the owner knew it had happened.

MacBook data recovery — a decade of photos

Home user

The problem

A 2019 MacBook's drive stopped spinning after a drop. It held roughly a decade of family photos that were never backed up. The user had tried three restarts and a data-recovery utility from the internet before contacting us.

What we did

We stopped all further use of the drive immediately, imaged the platters in the lab and ran a sector-level recovery, then rebuilt the photo library with integrity checks and repaired truncated JPEGs.

The outcome

11,402 of 11,618 photos recovered (98.2%), including every year of school photos from 2015–2024. We set up automated iCloud + external backup as the follow-up, and the drive was destroyed with a certificate.
